The Role


As an Assistant Director, you will be provided with a unique opportunity to undertake challenging and rewarding work that contributes to maintaining Australia’s cyber security resilience. Once in the role, you will lead a team that builds collaborative relationships across the organisation, wider government and international partners to provide timely advice to ASD leadership on progressing the agency’s interests.

The Cyber Uplift (CU) Branch is looking to fill a range of vacancies across our sections for natural problem-solvers who can manage complex relationships and provide high quality expertise in dynamic environments.

About our Team


The Foreign Investment and Telecommunications Security section in CU Branch represents the organization on foreign investment issues. We also provide cyber security advice to manage risks to Australia’s telecommunications infrastructure and to uplift its security.

The Secure Design and Architecture (SDA) section in CU Branch is responsible for promoting, enabling and providing technical advice to government entities on the cyber security design and architecture of new and emerging ICT projects. SDA promotes secure design principles more broadly alongside tailored advice and assistance for individual ICT proposals and projects. We work with entities to ensure their systems are designed with in a way that best mitigations the key cyber threats they face.


Our Ideal Candidate


Assistant Directors operate with a high level of autonomy. They perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Provide strategic and expert advice to ASD leadership, including supporting SES attendance at key whole-of-government meetings through written and verbal briefings.
  • Deliver cyber security reporting, advice and policy through the collation of input from subject matter experts and partner agencies across government
  • Be accountable for managing and leading a team, including providing clear and consistent communication, setting clear performance and behavioral standards, managing performance, delegating responsibility, guiding and developing people.
  • Review and analyse information to deliver continuous improvement of the team’s activities and business objectives.
  • Build and sustain effective relationships with stakeholders to facilitate cyber security advice and assistance developed by subject matter experts.
  • Engage proactively with stakeholders to further ASD’s national security objectives.
